Standing strong against bullying:
Shogun’s commitment
At Shogun Practical Karate, we believe martial arts is about more than just punches and kicks — it’s about building confidence, respect, and resilience.
That’s why we’re proud to be an Associate Member of The Anti-Bullying Alliance and actively support their important mission.
Empowering young people
We’ve been running annual Anti-Bullying Assemblies across our local communities – including Bushey, South Oxhey, Watford, Rickmansworth, Borehamwood, Stanmore Harrow, and Colchester – for several years.
These sessions aim to empower young people with tools and understanding to stand up against bullying – whether it’s physical, verbal, or online.
A personal story from Chief Instructor Doug Connell
Doug Connell, our Chief Instructor, knows all too well what it feels like to be bullied:
“When I was 11, I was bullied by a much older boy — he was about 15. It was a tough time, mostly physical bullying, and I wasn’t the only one. He targeted many younger children. I often think about one particular boy who didn’t have the confidence or tools to handle it and wonder how it affected him later in life.
Through martial arts, we believe you gain more than physical self-defense skills — you build the confidence that means you don’t become a target in the first place. That’s my sincerest hope for every student.”
